Meditation is a gouache painting created by Taiwanese artist CHEN Jing-Hui in 1958. The vertical portrait is 78 centimeters tall and 56.8 centimeters wide.
The painting is a realistic depiction of an East Asian woman with black hair. Her head is lowered and she is seated sideways on a white fabric sofa. Her eyes are looking down, as if deep in thought. Her black hair is put up in a bun, and she’s wearing a modified short-sleeved cheongsam that reaches her calves. The cheongsam features a Westernized blue plaid print. She has paired her dress with a pair of white flats with orange floral prints and a sky-blue silk scarf that she has draped over her shoulder while holding it with her right hand. Her left hand is resting on her legs. Accessories include a watch and pearl-like earrings with a light blue sheen. The background has been left largely blank, giving the painting a soft and elegant look.
CHEN Jing-Hui uses techniques found in Chinese ink wash portraits to capture the woman, her expression, and the texture of her clothing. Fine, smooth ink lines outline her main figure and realistically depict the plaid pattern of the blue cheongsam. From the precisely aligned seams and the visible inner lining, we can tell that the garment is finely crafted. Since this artwork is quite old, close observation of the original reveals some restoration marks on the woman’s waist and upper back.
CHEN Jing-Hui was sent to Japan at a young age and received a comprehensive art education there. After returning to Taiwan, he taught at Tamkang Senior High School. CHEN Jing-Hui dedicated his life to Taiwan’s art education. His works were often favorites at various awards, and he is especially skilled at portraying female subjects.
