Mother & Child in an Art Exhibition is a gouache painting created by HSU Chen-Chou in 1955. The painting is 134 centimeters tall and 91.4 centimeters wide. It depicts the daily struggles of a regular family, specifically parent-child relationship.
HSU Chen-Chou fills the entire frame with a mother and her son. The young mother stands on the left of the painting and is holding what appears to be the exhibition pamphlet as she looks determinately ahead. She has stylish short curly hair and is wearing a fitting cheongsam that highlights her curves. The fashionable cheongsam is adorned with exquisite velvet prints and reveals a white slip dress inside. She’s paired her outfit with white heels and a maroon handbag to create an elegant look. Her son, standing behind her, reaches only her waist. He is wearing a short-sleeved shirt, shorts, and sandals. In the artwork, he is looking up at his mother with a pout as he tugs her hand back, resisting as if in a game of tug-of-war. There is a potted plant in the painting as well.
Mother & Child in an Art Exhibition is HSU Chen-Chou’s tribute to artist LIN Zhizhu. LIN Zhizhu’s award-winning 1943 artwork Nice Day depicts a mother and daughter buying groceries. The mother, wearing a modified Taiwan cheongsam and wooden clogs, holds a shopping tote in one hand while the other hand is tugged by her tired daughter, who is now refusing to walk. On the ground is a single Chinese hibiscus flower. The image of a mother struggling with her child is identical in both paintings, just in different directions.
HSU Chen-Chou’s artwork has the realistic, detailed, and exquisite features of gouache paintings, but the subject of his artwork expresses his observations of people and customs under changing times, demonstrating his concern for society.
