Grandmother Playing with Flowers is an oil painting created by artist HUANG Ming-Je in 1981. The painting is 61 centimeters tall and wide.
The painting is a half-body portrait of a grandmother and her grandchild, depicted in nearly life-size proportions. It spotlights the relationship and interaction between the pair. The painting appears to be set at night. The grandmother has gray hair and is wearing a traditional indigo-dyed shirt. Her face and hands are covered in wrinkles. Her head is lowered, focused on the small flowers in her hand. A child, around ten years old, is leaning against her and looking intently at the grandmother’s hands as they tinker with the flowers. Their physical interaction reflects the strong bond between the grandmother and her grandchild.
In this painting, HUANG Ming-Je uses similar colors of varying shade and brightness to exquisitely create light, shadows, and colors. While the tone of the painting is quite dark, at first glance, light seems to be concentrated on the grandmother, her hands, and her grandchild in the center of the frame. Upon closer examination, the realistic depiction of shadows reveals the directional light coming from above, while the surrounding areas without light fade into darkness. This contrast of light and shadow effectively highlights the human subjects in the center, creating a serene and warm atmosphere.
As an artist, HUANG Ming-Je is constantly evolving his style and techniques. He was born in Yilan to farmer parents and was influenced by nativist literature in his early years, which led him to pursue nativist realism in his paintings. Grandmother Playing with Flowers is one of his early realist works that showcase his refined and exquisite expression of fundamental painting techniques.
