Created in 1987, Chen Huei-Tung’s Young Fisherman is an oil painting of a human figure and measures 167.5 centimeters tall and 135.6 centimeters wide. The Chinese title Taohairen literally means “someone who makes his living from the sea” and typically refers to a fisherman or sailor.
This painting realistically depicts the bow of a small fishing boat full of ropes and a fisherman standing in the sun on deck. Chest bare, his hands behind his back clasping the wooden poles of the boat, he grins at the viewer with a simple smile. The background is a vast blue sky, white clouds, and the blue sea.
Chen Huei-Tung’s composition is realistic and focuses on the three-dimensional effects of light and shadow upon objects, using them to depict the subject’s spirit and personality. The sun shines down on the man and the heavy shadowing shows his work-hardened chest, firm abdominal muscles, and the folds of the blue jeans. In his smiling mouth, we can see the shadows of a missing tooth.
Chen Huei-Tung also uses careful details to show that this is a working fishing boat: the cabin, the smoking chimney, the large, mottled boxes, and the coiled ropes on the deck, making space very cramped. The blue sky and the sea in the background show the other side of life on the open sea.
An exemplary Taiwanese creator in the field of figure painting, Chen Huei-Tung painted three presidents: Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Ching-kuo, and Chen Shui-bian. The portrait of the founding father of the Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, which hangs in the auditorium of the Presidential Palace, is his work.
