Depicting the moment of explosion in a coal mine, Soul of Fire (Miner 2) is an oil painting created by HUNG Jue-Lin in 1995. The painting is 33 centimeters long and 24.2 centimeters wide.
In the center of the painting, the dark depths of the coal mines are as bright as day, illuminated by the explosion. The reddish-orange brushstrokes representing flames radiate from the center toward all directions. The miners in the mine shaft appear to be experiencing the impact of the explosion, with some falling forward, some leaning back as if blown away from the explosion, and some already on the ground.
HUNG Jue-Lin uses rugged brushstrokes to create a semi-realistic depiction of an explosion. Several dark brown and dark green lines can be found on the top part and both sides of the painting, representing the wooden beams supporting the mine. From the outside of the frame to the center, these wooden beams become thinner and smaller. When coupled with light, shadows and colors, this visually creates a long, dark mining shaft. Dark lines are used to outline the contours of the miners in the mining shaft and their muscular builds. They are wearing headlamps, their faces devoid of any facial features. Their seemingly naked bodies are painted with dark colors, posing a strong contrast with the brightness created by the explosion in the center of the painting.
Documenting and eulogizing miners with his artwork, HUNG Jue-Lin was recognized as a key figure in Taiwan’s social realism aesthetic. This painting, which depicts the moment when disaster unfolds in a mine, demonstrates his deep compassion for miners, even years after retiring from mines. It also allows visitors to memorialize the miners who labored in dark, sunless mines and contributed to social development with their lives.
