Harvest Festival is a watercolor painting created by Wu Li Yu-Ge in 1984. It is 38 centimeters tall and 44.5 centimeters wide, making it a relatively small-sized figure painting.
Two trees, laden with clusters of fruit, stand erect in a busy square. Dozens of children are gathered around the foot of the trees, each child portrayed in a distinct pose. Some are smiling and dancing around a fishbowl in the center of the square, while others are watching and frolicking at the side. At the rear of the square is a row of old homes with tiled roofs.
The artist uses simple shapes and bright colors to depict the hustle and bustle of a crowd that is gathering to celebrate. The limbs of the fruit tree on either side of the square are bent as the leafy branches reach skyward, and the nearly 100 red dates that hang from them take up half of the composition. The dozens of children in the painting are dressed in brightly colored clothes, some with a tuft of hair above their forehead and others with their hair in a bun. Most children congregated in the lower half of the square. Their arms and legs are portrayed with curvilineal outlines to convey the kinetic energy in their dancing. A few children have even climbed up the trees to get a better look.
Wu Li Yu-Ge, who did not start painting until the age of 60, is one of the most iconic Taiwanese amateur painters. Due to her lack of professional training, she paints the world as she sees it, with childlike joy. As a result, the figures and flora in her paintings are delightfully unadorned, and the contour lines she creates with her paint brush are fine and simple. She uses vivid and effervescent hues to color her paintings. The overall effect is cheery, boisterous, and brimming with unpretentious joy.
