Audio Description

Entitled A Game, this 1964 vertical print on paper by Chiang Han-Tung measures 96.1 cm tall and 47 cm wide.

The artwork depicts six human figures who are either children or acrobatic performers. Working in groups of three, they are standing or sitting on the shoulders of each other, forming two symmetrical human towers, one on the right and the other on the left. With both hands, the figure in the lower right corner is supporting his teammates on his own shoulders, while the rest are all holding different wind instruments or acrobatic props.

The human figures in this artwork are not portrayed in a realistic style. They all have big, round faces, in addition to eyebrows and noses drawn with a single line. Their eyes are big, almond-shaped, and their mouths are small in size. Their slender hands and feet are decorated with fine lines, and their clothes are adorned with delicate, ornate patterns. The instruments in their hands are painted with free-flowing, spontaneous lines, reflecting the child-like, imaginative, artistic style of the artist.

To create this print on paper, the artist first printed the black outlines, then he filled in the colors by hand. The color schemes in use also echo the artwork's left-versus-right composition. Cool color tones such as blue and green can be seen in the center of the artwork, while warm color tones like orange and yellow are used on the right and left sides of the print.

With little emphasis on chiaroscuro or three-dimensional effects commonly used in sketches, Chiang’s artworks underscore the expression of the artist's inner feelings and thoughts. Based on a two-dimensional approach, this artwork presents a unique appearance and texture thanks to the many delicate lines that make up the rich image.
