Head Portrait of Hsiao Chin is a sketch on paper by SHIY De-jinn. The artwork is 38 centimeters tall and 26.3 centimeters wide. The exact year the artwork was created is still unknown.
The drawing shows a side view, about 45 degrees, of HSIAO Chin's head from the collar up. SHIY De-jinn uses a black marker to create crisp, clean lines that capture HSIAO Chin lowering his eyes in thought. In the drawing, HSIAO Chin is depicted with short hair that reveals his ears and a hearty face featuring a slight double chin. Below his full forehead is a pair of thick eyebrows with prominent peaks, and a rich mustache stretches above his lips. HSIAO Chin is depicted in a printed, buttoned-down shirt with lowered eyes and a calm expression, as if deep in thought.
HSIAO Chin (1935-2023, age 88 years) was a good friend of SHIY De-jinn, one of the founders of Taiwan’s first abstract art group – Ton Fan Group, and an important artist to the art history of Taiwan. He studied Eastern philosophies and developed a unique abstract style with the avant-garde artistic expressions and vibrant colors found in the West to convey these Eastern philosophies, making him a master of international renown.
SHIY De-jinn created several portraits of many of his friends in the art and literary circle. He was especially skilled at capturing human emotions, accurately conveying HSIAO Chin’s features and expressions in this simple head portrait sketch with only black lines and without any light or shadow. The lines in the Head Portrait of Hsiao Chin are simple yet powerful. They depict the features of HSIAO Chin’s face but also document a moment where HSIAO Chin seems deep in thought, pondering philosophy. With this drawing, SHIY De-jinn expresses his admiration and praise toward HSIAO Chin.
