Audio Description

The artwork titled Figure is an abstract painting expressed in watercolor. It was created by artist HSIA Yang and is 37.4 centimeters tall and 31.6 centimeters wide.

The painting is set on a stage. Under the spotlight is a blurred character composed of convoluted lines. The character appears to be leaning forward, raising both hands, and swaying its body.

HSIA Yang draws a single horizontal line across the painting to separate the stage and the background. In the center, he draws a yellow horn-shaped color block that widens at the bottom to represent the area illuminated by the spotlight. The character in the spotlight is created using ink wash techniques. HSIA Yang first wets his ink brush with water before dipping it in watercolor. Then, he smudges out the body and legs and uses thick black lines and wild white strokes to create the raised arms. The head and the torso is created by layering on entangled curling lines of varying sizes in black, purple, and gray, which also captures the body’s swaying motion. The last step is lathering on thick white paint in short lines radiating out of the character, to create an illusion that the character is radiating light but to also highlight movement.

HSIA is an important artist in promoting the development of modern art in Taiwan. He combined Western medium with Eastern techniques of impressionism, creating abstract characters like the one in Figure with numerous lines. Though lacking realistic features and facial expressions, the bold lines are able to capture the character’s movement in a unique way. Artworks featuring these characters were later collectively recognized as his renowned “Furry People" series.D
